Would You Walk 35 Miles for $2.65?

At an average of 4 miles per hour it would take the average walker a little more than eight hours to walk thirty-five miles. That’s non-stop for eight hours. Rest and water breaks, or a quick zip to a fast food restaurant, and the journey could be nine hours.

What’s nine hours of your time worth? Well, if you earn minimum wage, this high-stepping venture would cost you about $67.50 in lost wages. On the other hand, some one earning $35.00 per hour would be $315 bucks out-of-pocket for the same hike.

So where am I going with this? Certainly not 35 miles away from this subject. I was listing to a friend, ergo Rick Snyder, complain about the price of gasoline while he was filling up his 35 MPG Honda Civic, and I thought… 35 miles? How long would it take me to WALK that far? If he needed a friend to walk with him, I told him I would because I make nothing per hour, and it wouldn’t cost me much at all.

Thanks for wirting this story, Alan. i clearly remember our conversation and how it really made me think. You know I consider you one of America’s great thinkers of the 21st century and can’t wait to hear you on the radio! I know you’ll have the most compelling talk show in America once you get rolling. Best of luck and keep on walkin’…..
